Hey guys. it’s Lois, back with another Standalone Sunday.

Standalone Sunday is a weekly meme created by Megan @ Bookslayerreads. Every Sunday we make a post about a standalone book, so one that is not part of a series. There is an awful lot of focus are books that are part of a series, so it is always nice to feature a standalone book.

So, here is this weeks Standalone Sunday book, A Seven-Letter Word by Kim Slater.

Published: 24th March 2016

Synopsis:

My name is Finlay McIntosh. I can see OK, can hear perfectly fine and I can write really, really well. But the thing is, I can’t speak. I’m a st-st-st-stutterer. Hilarious, isn’t it? It’s like the word is there in my mouth, fully formed and then, just as it’s ready to leave my lips . . . POP! It jumps and ricochets and bounces around my gob. Except it isn’t funny at all, because there’s not a thing I can do about it.

Finlay’s mother vanished two years ago. And ever since then his stutter has become almost unbearable. Bullied at school and ignored by his father, the only way to get out the words which are bouncing around in his head is by writing long letters to his ma which he knows she will never read, and by playing Scrabble online. But when Finlay is befriended by an online Scrabble player called Alex, everything changes. Could it be his mother secretly trying to contact him? Or is there something more sinister going on?”

My Comments:

This book is wonderful! It is such a heart-warming coming-of-age story. I read this whilst on holiday last year and I read it extremely quickly. Once I had got into the story I just wanted to keep learning more about the characters and the storyline. I picked this book up quite sporadically when I was in the local bookstore last summer. A staff member said that she had really enjoyed reading it and I just decided there and then I would give it a go.

I think the setting I was in when I was reading this book helped with how quick I read this book. I was in a relaxing setting and I had all the time in the world so I just didn’t put it down. I think it took me just short of two days to finish reading. I immediately gave it to my younger sister to read and ordered Kim Slater’s previous book.

This is another of the books that I wrote a review of when I began this blog. Read my 4 star review here.

There you have it this weeks Standalone Sunday. Comment below if you have read this book or plan on reading this book as well as your thoughts.
